ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – WEDNESDAY 19th OCTOBER 2016 AT 7.30 PM

The Society’s 5th Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday 19th October 2016 at the Rock Sailing & Water Ski Club and I hope to see you there.

Enclosed are:

  • Invitation to the AGM, acceptance slip, nomination form and proxy voting slip
  • Notice of the AGM and Agenda
  • Minutes of the 4th AGM of the Society

I am delighted to say that our President Sir David Brewer has accepted an invitation to attend and will present a talk entitled “The Camel: From the River to a Crest”.

This will be a good opportunity for you to meet Sir David and I know he will be more than pleased to speak with individual members during the course of the evening following the completion of the AGM and talk.

PLANNING

Since the change in Government policy, planning applications for wind turbines and solar panels have all but ceased.  There are some outside our area that may yet appeal, as it’s less than six months since refusal, e.g. Pines and Scarcewater Tips at Fraddon.  There is also one already in appeal within our area of concern at Higher Tremail Farm on the edge of Davidstow Airfield.  The Society has already objected to this application and no further public comment can be made.  The Planning Inspectorate are incredibly slow at dealing with appeals so this application will most likely not be decided until sometime next year.

Concerns have been raised about the National Trust plans for Pentire Head at Polzeath.  No firm proposals have been issued and there is to be a public exhibition/consultation later in the autumn, dates to be decided. As the Trust has recently spent large sums acquiring both Trevose Head and several acres of Lake District farmland, they may not have the money to do very much.

Inappropriately sized and/or sited housing schemes are also of concern as they can have a major impact on both villages and landscape within our area, and several have been proposed for the Wadebridge area. Recently an application for 190 houses on the southern side of the river was refused, but may appeal.  None of the other schemes have as yet made formal applications.  Other applications at Blisland for 12 houses, and Altarnun for 37 houses, were recently refused but also may yet appeal.

The long running proposal for housing at Chyryn Drive, St. Breward continues with a very recent application being made for 21 houses to include 11 affordable (PA16/07062).  This is a long established site allocated for housing and, as there is a need for local affordable housing, this is likely to be supported by the Parish Council.  There appear to be local objections to site layout and access, so for any concerned members now is the time to object.

Finally, the Society’s area of concern is the Camel Valley and Bodmin Moor.  This sounds straight forward but by using the online Cornwall Council interactive mapping service it can be shown that this area actually consists of 27 different Parishes.  There is at present no easy means of listing applications made in all of these parishes other than by individual searches.  This is obviously extremely time-consuming.  The Trustees therefore remain reliant on members notifying us of any applications that may conflict with the Society’s aims.  Contact can be made via Nicola: tandnmundy@tiscali.co.uk.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Trip to Davidstow Military Museum:  At the end of May a group of members made a most enjoyable visit to the Military Museum at Davidstow Airfield.  I would thoroughly recommend anyone who hasn’t yet been there to make a point of going.  You will not be disappointed.  Have a look at their website: www.cornwallatwarmuseum.co.uk

Wine-Tasting and Meal:  On 15th September members and several guests attended a wine tasting and a simple, but delicious supper at Seven Souls Yard (formerly Carruan Farm) organised and run by Tamsin Jones, previously manager of Wadebridge Wines and now owner of Mission wines.  It was a pity that the turn-out was so low as it was a very enjoyable and informative evening. We were introduced to a number of lesser known but tasty and interesting wines.

As always, it would be really helpful if you could offer any suggestions at the AGM with regard to future speakers for our meetings in February, May and October/November (Agenda item 6).

I look forward to welcoming you to the AGM on 19th October.

Richard Vyvyan-Robinson
Chairman
